Quentin Tarantino had been working on ‘Once upon a time in Hollywood’ since 2017 or even earlier. In fact, at first, the film was going to be the new production of the Weinstein brothers (Bob and Harvey). In addition, his scheduled release date was set for the summer of 2018 … However, we all know what happened next with the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal. This event, irremediably, affected the film of Tarantino that happened to SONY power when becoming fully with the rights of the same one. From there, the born filmmaker Knoxville continued working on the film and a new release date was set: August 9, 2019. Date subsequently moved definitively for July 26, 2019, in the USA, August 15 for Spain.
The script is the work, once again, of Tarantino himself who offers us the following story: “Los Angeles, 1969. Everything is changing and the star of television, Rick Dalton, and his double action, Cliff Booth, make their way and they fight in a Hollywood that they hardly recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous neighbor … Sharon Tate. Thus, several plots will meet in the future of both men. Among them is the Mason Family.
Many were the interpreters contacted by the filmmaker to join the project. Many accepted the first one. Others, for some reasons or others, will not finally come out. Among these were Tom Cruise, Jennifer Lawrence, and Burt Reynolds. The first two at the end were left in “rumors”. For his part, Reynolds passed away before he could join the shoot.
The artists who stayed from the first moment were Leonardo DiCaprio (Rick Dalton), Brad Pitt (Cliff Booth) and Margot Robbie. The latter accepting the role of Sharon Tate, the wife of Roman Polanski savagely murdered by “The Manson Family”. In fact, the first premiere date set by SONY was the aforementioned August 9, 2019. Date that meant the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Sharon Tate (August 9, 1969).
Other very illustrious names of the cast are those of Al Pacino, Kurt Russell, and Dakota Fanning. They also include Timothy Olyphant, Bruce Dern (inheriting the role of Burt Reynolds) and Tim Roth. The rest of the cast is completed: Damian Lewis, Luke Perry, Emile Hirsch, James Marsden, Michael Madsen, Clifton Collins, Keith Jefferson, Nicholas Hammond, Julia Butters, Lorenza Izzo, and Scoot McNairy. In addition, Damon Herriman will play Charles Manson and Rafal Zawierucha will be characterized as Roman Polanski.
‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ has been shot entirely in different locations in California. Its budget is around 90-100 million $. Part of that money has been used to set the scene. This was expressed by Tarantino himself: “Street by street, block by block, we are going to transform Los Angeles in the Hollywood of 1969. Everything in full swing of the counterculture and the hippy revolution”. Finally, the controversial filmmaker leaves us the following statement: “This movie will probably be the closest thing I’ve done to Pulp Fiction”
